OK petrol heads, it isn’t exactly official yet. But, if the latest quotes from F1 powerhouse Bernie Ecclestone are to be believed, Formula 1 could be returning to our shores as early as 2016.
You would like more good news, you say? OK, how about the fact that it looks like Cape Town is the preferred destination. Adios Kyalami, it’s been real but we’re looking at somewhere a little more pleasing on the eye. This from the Daily Mail:
Ecclestone is currently in the process of proposing terms for the country to again figure on the schedule, hopefully from 2016, and significantly with Cape Town the venue.
Ecclestone said: ‘I’ve been looking to go back to South Africa for a long time, and now we have a good chance.
‘They’re getting on with it. We’re hoping to be back in 2016, but we will have a look and see. We’ll see how we get on.’
It seems Anthony Hamilton, father of two-time world champion Lewis, is also on board with the plan and lending his weight to the idea of bringing F1 back to South Africa after a 22-year hiatus.
We salute you, Ecclestone and Hamilton. Also, if you could tell Lewis to bring his better half Nicole Scherzinger along we would be well pleased.
