The gunman in question claimed to be armed with a Kalashnikov and grenades, taking hostages at a post office in the French capital. It has subsequently emerged that he was armed with nothing more than a knife.

He then phoned police to inform them that he had taken hostages and engaged in negotiations.

rt.com is reporting he has since released an unknown number of hostages and surrendered to police, although the exact details have not been confirmed yet by those on the scene. This photo below from the Daily Mail is said to show the man surrendering.

Whether or not this is linked to last week’s atrocities is not yet clear although BFM TV, a French TV news channel, claims a source has revealed the two are not related.

The hostage-taker “is disappointed in love”… a customer “who lost his head” and speaks of “heartbreak.”

Sources told AFP [Associated Foreign Press] that the man was “speaking incoherently“.
