If the Oscar Pistorius and Shrien Dewani trials have taught us anything it’s that we, as a country, love a good murder mystery.
It is with much interest then that we bring you the latest instalment in the Mauritian murder scandal that broke last week. Get up to speed HERE.
The accused, Peter Roberts, has been provisionally charged in relation to the death of his girlfriend Lee-Ann Palmarozza and is currently being detained in a police cell, although as TimesLive reports:
The legal system in Mauritius differs from South Africa in that a person may be charged provisionally even though the investigation has not been concluded.
Details have also emerged of the rocky romance between the two, with friends of Palmarozza saying that she had been unhappy to fly to Mauritius for the festive period. Jackie Strydom, a close friend of the deceased for nearly 20 years, described the relationship as “toxic”:
“They split up so many times over the years, but then he’d just try and win her back again,” she said.
Strydom said Roberts was not a “very friendly guy” and appeared controlling.
“He lived a very secluded life with her, even to the point where he didn’t want her to have any friends.”
A friend of Roberts, the multimillionaire who owns a villa at the posh Anahita resort where Palmarozza was found dead, came to his defence stating that Roberts enjoyed a low-key lifestyle and wasn’t a part of the Joburg big-money circles where men eat sushi off naked women and drink expensive bubbly (because they can, basically).
He was a “generous guy”, to such an extent that people could sometimes take advantage of him, the friend said.
The friend said Roberts was socially low-key. He never went to clubs and was not a heavy drinker : “He wasn’t the kind of guy that was in nightclubs partying. He wasn’t that type of person.
Media reports in Mauritius have also pegged the cause of death as asphyxiation. This one could get interesting 2Ovibers, me thinks there is plenty more to come.
