If you have turned on the news over the past day, you would have heard about what went down at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The satirical weekly newspaper, which had recently poked a bit of fun at the leader of ISIS, was attacked by gunmen around lunchtime yesterday who stormed an editorial meeting and killed 12 people.
A video, taken from BBC, has emerged showing the gunmen executing a cop, despite his pleas for mercy after being wounded and lying prone on the pavement. It may well make your stomach turn, so proceed with caution.
US president Barack Obama has denounced the attack in the strongest possible terms. This excerpt is taken from the Guardian:
…condemns what he [Obama] calls the ‘cowardly, evil’ attack against Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper, in Paris. The president offered US assistance to the French government, saying ‘we will stand with the people of France, through this very, very difficult time.’ Earlier on Wednesday FBI Director James Comey confirmed that his agency was working with the French authorities to find the people responsible for the attack.
France’s Muslim leaders have also issued a public statement condemning the act of violence, with israelnationews.com quoting the following from the French Muslim Council:
This extremely grave barbaric action is also an attack against democracy and the freedom of the press…
In this tense international climate stoked by the madness of terrorist groups unjustly claiming to represent Islam, we call on all those attached to the republic’s values and to democracy to avoid provocation.
The gunmen, who witnesses said were shouting “We have avenged the Prophet Muhammad” and “God is Great” in Arabic (“Allahu Akbar”), fled from the scene in a black vehicle. Police then released pictures of two of the suspects, two brothers in their early 30s.
It seems there are contradicting reports as to whether or not the suspects are now in custody, with some reports suggesting that one suspect has been killed and the other two taken into custody. Check out NBC for a rundown of the latest (conflicting) reports. #JeSuisCharlie
