Like we get toy-toying strikers in South Africa, so America gets crowds of protestors.
The protests for Eric Garner are getting bigger and spreading across the country at a rapid rate.
Last night, New York City saw a massive increase in participants, with some even carrying coffins “bearing the names of victims of fatal police encounters”.
Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Holland Tunnel and West Side Highway were completely full of people, and the Staten Island Ferry terminal had to be blocked by police officers.
Protests have also spread to Chicago and Boston.
A remarkable silence washed over the crowd. They lay there, silent, for 11 minutes: one minute for each time Garner gasped, “I can’t breathe,” as he was put in the chokehold in July.
Times Square was even more busy than usual, with protestors surrounding yellow cabs (they didn’t mind, and honked in support).
Crowd could be heard singing:
“I still hear my brother crying, ‘I can’t breathe.’ Now I’m in the struggle saying, ‘I can’t leave.’ We’re calling out the violence of racist police. We ain’t gonna stop ’til our people are free.”
