‘Tis an early Christmas miracle! The Jacaranda covered city, best known for the Hillbrow tower and the never-ending list of traffic lights that aren’t working, has finally won something.
The Good City’s Index awarded the City of Gold as the second most inspirational city in the world.
What is the criteria, and what’s it all about?
The list is “a celebration of the 50 cities around the world that best capture the elusive quality of possibility”.
The cities on the list need to encapsulate the “ethos of citizens creatively engaging with their surroundings with the expectation that, with a little work, things can get better”.
So, what helped Joburg get this prized accolade? The Inner City Metro Park, the mobile Wi-Fi library, a 5-kilometer bicycle track and sidewalk along Orlando, to name a few.
Just to let you know, the winning city is Hong Kong, and third place went to Mexico City.
P.S. Just remember, Jozi, Cape Town is still the Mother City.
