We have all experienced that moment when you are late for a meeting or boozy lunch and some freak in the car in front of you is so engrossed with playing Candy Crush on his phone that you all end up missing the green light… Or that amazing taxi that thinks he owns the road. They are THE BEST. They absolutely delight me (oh good, now I’m getting road rage just sitting at my desk).
There’s a lady in Joburg who is currently in an induced coma because of road rage. Her car and another’s were involved in a little bumper scraping, and she approached the other car to get details. The driver then drove off, dragging her with the car.
And we all remember the guy who shot dead a motorcyclist in February, again in Joburg.
Dr Jacques van Zyl, a psychologist, says road rage is on the increase. He blames it on the economic situation and stress, the time of the year, alcohol and depression.
Howard Dembovsky, the founder of the Justice Project SA, says “Road rage is being caused by the lack of law enforcement on our roads”.
92.8% of enforcement by Joburg metro officers is done behind a speed camera.
Another reason could be the ten million cars on SA’s roads.
No. Come on. I put it down to people blatantly ignoring the rules of the road (and yes, I will point fingers at taxis, who are now driving in the oncoming traffic lane to get green lights). Rules are there for a reason. If everyone just indicated with their flickers timeously, so that people who aren’t psychic could have an inkling on what you are going to do, there would also be less dramatics.
Rant over.
Apparently, our road rage problem can be defeated through education, says Van Zyl.
Oh god. We all know that’s never going to work here…
