This isn’t how you would expect your evening to end, is it?
A Cape Town woman was driving home along Low Road in Wetton when suddenly the tarred road gave way beneath her car and it fell into a very deep sinkhole.
Thankfully two passers by saw the car vanish into the road and ran to help her. The car was so deep that she had to stand on her car seat and then they could pull her out of the sinkhole.
Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services Ernest Sonnenberg says an investigation shows that a water main had burst which caused a hole to develop. The earth then gradually seeped into it. The road that was covered by the tar had eventually weakened to the point that it fell into the hole that had been building up for a while.
She will be able to claim for a new car from the City of Cape Town through its insurance.
