Well this is a little twist in the tale now, isn’t it? (And something I will totally admit to not ever thinking about.)
Bernard Mitchell, a convicted criminal and fellow inmate, apparently got chatting to Tongo in prison, and has now been called on as a witness.
Mitchell has told how the whole saga was actually a kidnapping gone wrong. When Anni’s two killers accidentally shot her whilst deciding whether they were going to rape her or not, they needed another plan.
When Anni’s killers realised their mistake, they discussed changing their plan to blackmail by threatening to blame Dewani for the killing unless he paid them. But, having received advice that this was unlikely to work, the gangsters chose instead to cut deals with the South African prosecution service by which they would benefit from accusing the Briton.
Shit’s getting real.
They then apparently blackmailed Shrien Dewani, with threats that if he didn’t pay them money, they would tell the police that he asked them to kill his wife. This would explain the Cape Grace incident These guys clearly think they are gangsters.
