So the United States has just had its mid-term elections, and the results are not exactly favourable for current US president Barack Obama (who is a Democrat).
Firstly, this is what was up for election: about one-third of the Senate, the entire House of Representatives, 36 of 50 state governors, and countless state and local offices. Which is a lot of people.
The results have started coming in, and already the Republicans have won seven new States, and “easily won the six seats it needed to win control of the Senate”.
What does this mean for Obama’s last two years in the White House?
They [The Republicans] will now have the power to complicate, if not block completely, Mr Obama’s agenda in the last two years of his tenure in the White House. Control of the Senate will also enable the Republicans to stymie his ability to name new federal judges, cabinet members and senior government officials.
The Republicans also hold seats in about 12 other States. Utah is sending its first black Republican woman, Mia Love, to the White House.
What does this mean for the Democrats? And does it show just how unpopular Obama is becoming?
As well as taking the Senate, the Republicans are projected to increase their majority in the House of Representatives to levels not seen since before World War Two.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner has said that “it’s time for government to start getting results and implementing solutions to the challenges facing our country, starting with our still-struggling economy”.
