We’ve all been in this situation: you’re driving home from the beach, you’re hot, sticky and covered in sand. The air-con in the car is taking a while to kick in because your black leather upholstery has been sucking in the sunshine for five hours whilst you frolicked in the waves. Your back is so stuck to the backrest that you feel you are a part of it. And then it happens. Someone drives past you on a Vespa, their hair waving in the summer air, breeze off the ocean cooling them down.
In your fantasy, you pull your car over, get out, and later sell it and buy a Vespa.
Vespa’s are the epitome of cool. They ooze a lifestyle that is fun and adventurous. Which is why it was such a great idea to do a mash-up of Vespa and South African artist Richard Scott.
He worked with four models, four vibrant colours and 16 Vespas to create a collection of 30 paintings, four prints that were replicated 46 times and 20 sketches that were reproduced 14 times. And then he painted these images onto actual Vespas.
“Richard’s playful, naïve pop art style gels perfectly with the classic, colourful and slightly cheeky ethos of Vespa. Without art, Vespa would be just another scooter; without creativity, Vespa would be just a mode of commuting,” says Director of Vespa SA Andy Reid.
This latest exhibition of Richard’s is called Joyride and is described as an explosion of positive energy with bold, contemporary artworks. It has resulted in the four-part collection which pops with colour as he explores the concept of joy as art.
“When art and creativity meet – unique, attractive creations form and are difficult to ignore. In fact, they push you to celebrate with unbridled joy. That’s what Joyride is all about and at Vespa we know the surefire formula for exuberance and exhilaration is your Vespa and the open road – try it.”
You’ll fall in love with the Vespa and it won’t be long before your post beach fantasy becomes a reality.
P.S. You don’t have to keep your Vespa locked away in winter. Imagine cozying up in your favourite coat and scarf and nipping down to your local deli to get fresh croissants and cheese, and then heading home to a fresh pot of coffee.
You can practically create your own Italian movie. Except it will be your real life.
