I don’t think anyone was expecting this to happen…
When Zambia’s President Michael Sata passed away in London on Tuesday, the obvious step to take was elevating the vice president into his position. Turns out though, he is 70-year old Guy Scott, a former farmer with Scottish parents.
Scott was “promoted to acting president on Wednesday” and will serve for the next 90 days, until an election is held. Scott is barred from running for presidency himself.
Scott has admitted that the colour of skin probably helped him land the vice position, and that Sata knew what he was doing.
“Michael knows about political symbolism. It’s one in the eye for his critics who say he’s a tribalist. Obviously, he’s not.”
Guy Scott is also the first white president on the African continent in 20 years.
