The court of public debate is once again open for all the couch lawyers out there who are making judgements from the safety of their homes.
As the Shrien Dewani trial continues, without nearly as much fuss as Oscar created, people’s opinions can sway both ways.
Did he do it? Did he actually plan his wife’s murder? Or was is really just a hijacking that ended in the worst possible way?
On Tuesday, videos showing Dewani and taxi driver Zola Tongo meeting in the Cape Grace Hotel were shown to the court.
The first clip shows Tongo sitting on a couch in a room at the back of the hotel, shortly after 09h00. Dewani then approaches him, looking to the door he has walked through, and around the room. He also looks at his phone while talking to Tongo.
There was a window cleaner present in the room, says Tongo, and Dewani asked the person to “give us some privacy, give us some space”.
Dewani then smiles as the cleaner leaves and stands with his hand in his pocket, leaning against a railing near the window as the two speak.
Tongo said they knew there were cameras in the room, and that he pointed them out to Dewani, who then walks under the camera and leaves.
What did they speak about?
“Mr Dewani wanted to find out and continuously kept on asking whether I am fine. He also wanted to know whether the job has been done. I answered saying to him I don’t know.”
A second video then shows Dewani coming back into the room and talking to Tongo. Tongo said that Dewani wanted to know if he had “any information about what happened. Did those gentlemen really do what they were supposed to do?”
Dewani is then seen pacing the room.
Interesting stuff.
