Rape is rape, the semantics of the situation can’t really be argued.
Well, the lawyer of an alleged rapist believes that they can.
Jesse Penton, the lawyer of said rapist, Mathys van Zyl, who sexually assaulted a young girl, said that his client’s rape incident wasn’t as bad, because he only used his finger. “Mere touching of genitalia” is a “less serious form of rape”, said Penton.
His words caused the young victim’s father to storm out of the South Gauteng High Court.
He argued that “scratching the inside of the genitalia of a child with the tip of a finger is not as serious as putting an adult penis inside”.
Van Zyl had previously been found guilty of sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in 2009. For that crime he received a five-year suspended sentence.
