This is not the most ideal news for an already drab Monday, but hey, how much worse can a Monday get?
Turns out it can get a lot worse, especially for the northern white rhino.
A a wildlife conservancy in Kenya has reported that one of the seven remaining rhinos has died, which means that there are ONLY SIX LEFT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.
Well done, humans.
Suni the rhino was 34 years old, and was the first of his kind to be born in captivity (at a zoo in the Czech Republic). The good news is that he was not poached, but his cause of death is unknown at the moment. He was one of the last two breeding males, which puts a lot of pressure on the last surviving one.
Suni was moved to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in 2009 and put into a breeding program. They were hoping he would help in trying to curb the extinction of his species.
“We will continue to do what we can to work with the remaining three animals on Ol Pejeta in the hope that our efforts will one day result in the successful birth of a northern white rhino calf.”
