Annette Vergeer, the probation officer who has spent much of the past 48 hours being drilled by Gerrie Nel, has said that Oscar Pistorius would benefit from house arrest rather than spending time in prison.
[Vergeer] described the dangers of drugs, gangs and sodomy in South Africa’s prisons, which she said are poorly equipped for disabled people. She also warned of the risks of transmission of HIV and tuberculosis due to overcrowding and poor sanitation.
Prison sounds like fun.
Vergeer has said that Oscar should rather “be sentenced to three years of correctional supervision and community service”.
She argued that the prison system could not secure Oscar’s safety, nor would the prison have facilities for him.
Gerrie Nel then questioned why Vergeer didn’t trust prison officials “as being professional people who knew how to deal with people with disabilities”.
It is of Vergeer’s opinion that Oscar is very unlikely to reoffend, and as such, house arrest would suffice.
