It’s like a whole war broke out on the field between Serbia and Albania during their Euro 2016 qualifier game.
With tensions already running high between the two teams and their fans, all hell broke loose when an Albanian flag was flown onto the pitch via a drone.
The flag was grabbed by a Serbian player, and the most (un)expected brawl broke out.
Team members, players on the bench, managers and fans all got involved. There was even a chair.
Riot police then moved in when around a dozen fans invaded the pitch and attacked the Albanian players, forcing them to retreat into the tunnel as flares were thrown from the terraces.
Here’s a bit of background as to why there is such a huge amount of tension between the two teams:
Albanians and Serbians are the two ethnicities involved in the dispute over Kosovo. While the international community at large recognizes Kosovo’s autonomy, which the Albanian community has pursued for a very long time, Serbia still does not. Several members of Albania’s team were born in Kosovo.
After a 30 minute delay, the match was called off by England ref Martin Atkinson, with the score at 0-0.
