3D printing is moving along swiftly, which is good news for car enthusiasts. Because now there is a 3D printed car!
It’s called the Strati and is designed by a company called Local Motors. It took six days to assemble at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago, Il.
Lance Ulanoff got to test drive it in New York this week. Whilst it is by no means a big car, it can still fit two grown men, even if they can’t straighten their legs.
“Local Motors plans to work on making the cars street legal and if you buy one next year for roughly $18,000 and an upgrade becomes available, they’ll simply take back the fully recyclable chassis and print you a new, delimited, 3D printed car that can reach 50 miles per hour.”
The current car has a speed limit of about 25mph, which is fine if you’re cruising around your neighbourhood to pick up some milk. It has no seat belts or airbags, but does have two small storage areas.
The Strati has four large Bridgestone Battlax motorcycle tyres, and runs on a small Renault Twizy Motor and a 120 pound battery.
Nice.
