Wow. This got heated incredibly fast, with interesting views and comments being debated.
Ben Affleck was on the HBO show Real Time, promoting his latest film, Gone Girl. Except for ten minutes, no one spoke about the great actor/director, and instead five men got completely engrossed in a debate about the Muslim religion and IS.
Host of Real Time, Bill Maher, started the debate last week by saying:
“Vast numbers of Muslims around the world believe that humans deserve to die for merely holding a different idea, or drawing a cartoon, or writing a book, or eloping with the wrong person. Not only does the Muslim world have something in common with ISIS, it has too much in common with ISIS.”
The group of men, including religious author Sam Harris, and Michael Steele, a political analyst, got talking again this week.
After Affleck asked if the men thought if “Islamaphobia is not a real thing”, Harris replied “Ben, we have to be able to criticise bad ideas. And Islam at this moment is the motherload of bad ideas.”
Affleck then responded:
“How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, and don’t do any of the things you say all Muslims do?”
