Hanging out at the mall on a Friday night is The Thing To Do for many teenagers. I suspect parents think their sweet littles are doing nothing more than eating McDonalds and watching animated movies, and are perfectly safe.
Maybe not so much.
There’s been ANOTHER mall robbery, this time at the V&A Watrefront. Granted this happened in the car park (much like the Canal Walk incident a few days ago), it still sparks the notion of worry in your mind. Especially when it’s a busy day and you have had to park seven floors below ground in some tucked away corner where no phone signal has ever reached.
Anyway, this happened at 13h00, in broad daylight, by five armed men, and they stole the 65-year old man’s jewellery.
Are we not even safe at the mall anymore, where there are literally hundreds of people swarming around like ants?
“Gauteng police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba held a media briefing in September to speak about the recent spate of shopping mall robberies in Gauteng. He revealed that cellphones were the target in 95% of the robberies. At the time, it was reported that 11 mall robberies had been reported in the previous month.”
It seems the Western Cape is the current target, with crimes happening at Somerset Mall, Blue Route, Canal Walk and Zevenwacht shopping malls.
Apparently thieves are targeting cellphone and jewelry stores. So, avoid going shopping for those two things. Stick to books and clothes and shoes (err, ok!).
