After attending a 21st birthday party dressed up as Venus and Serena Williams, two Stellenbosch University students caused enormous outrage.
With calls for disciplinary action against the students by much of the public, the University has decided otherwise:
“The pursuance of critical debate and conciliatory conversations is of much greater value to Stellenbosch University’s student community than action against the students that caused the buzz on social media last week…”
Quite right. There’s no point in kicking them out of uni – rather use this to educate them and other students.
The acting rector and vice-chancellor, Professor Leopoldt van Huyssteen, has said that the University has taken this matter in a serious light, and that sensitivity needs to be prevalent.
