And I mean that in a good way! I recently gave up driving long distances to visit my family dentist, and opted rather for someone in Green Point. My goodness, was I surprised! It’s amazing how accepting we are of prehistoric stuffy old medical services..
Like a lot of you, I was quite used to visiting the doctor or the dentist far away from where I live. It’s a habit thing, I guess – you continue to use the practices you did as a child and, as a result, you accept the 2009 issues of Huisgenoot and YOU strewn around the doctor / dentist rooms. You think the equipment in the dentist room is up to date, as well. It doesn’t occur to you that things – in particular, tech – might have progressed since your dentist first set up shop. Just like new advanced cellphones, progression in the lines of dentistry tech can surely only be to your advantage?
An old filling of mine fell out and, pressed for time, I couldn’t bare the thought of driving through to Milnerton to get it sorted out. Chelsea booked an appointment in Green Point and I went through to see Dr. George Botha at De Waterkant Health. What a pleasant surprise it was to find a waiting room not too dissimilar to an ad agency lobby, with a dentist who introduced himself by his first name, George.
And this wasn’t just any dentist, these guys do everything from fillings and dermatology services, to cosmetic dentistry and full-on medical procedures.
I cruised into his ‘office’ and was blown away by what could only be the latest tech when it comes to dentistry. “Yes,” he tells me, “part of the reason I chose dentistry over being a medical doctor, was the gadgets!”
Aah, a man after my own heart!
The place was so modern and clinical (in a nice, reassuring way) I immediately felt comfortable. This was further compounded when he started working on my tooth – as Goldfish started playing on the high-quality sound system he has built into his theatre. Yes, I can get used to this..
I checked out their website and found this:
De Waterkant Health was started by Dr Mark Bowes in 2010, after 23 years of running a successful private practice in London, Mark returned home and realised Cape Town could benefit from a modern, state-of-the-art practice, that would make trips to the dentist and dermatologist, an enjoyable experience. Mark was joined by Dr Ilsphi Browne in 2012 and by Dr George Botha and Dr Gerhard Van Niekerk in 2013.
Our team is exceptionally professional; all of the doctors have practiced in Europe and are up to date in European standards and continue with tertiary education by frequently attending conferences in South Africa and abroad. We believe in a healthy lifestyle, psychological well-being and medicines, where necessary.
Our practice has the most modern equipment available, creating beautiful smiles every time as well as gorgeous skin and facial aesthetics.

If you’re still using a dentist who operates miles away from where you live, or if you care about the tools and products being used by your dentist, give these guys a try – they’re high tech. Honestly – it’s like a scene out of Nip / Tuck!
Ahem, that’s obviously with regards to the cleanliness and tech 😉
