Ello is the new social network taking the internet by storm, with over 30 000 requests to join an hour. It’s a bit of a mix between Twitter and Tumbler, where you can post photos and GIFs, status updates and comments.
Why the sudden popularity though?
According to Facebook policy, you have to use your real name to create an account, where on Ello you do not. The LGBT community has recently seen an increase in problems with Facebook accounts, where drag queens, for instance, can’t use their performing name.
And so the move to Ello, where you can “connect, create, and celebrate life”.
Oh, it’s also ad free, for the moment, which is wonderful.
The Ello manifesto is as follows:
“Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.”
