A lot of words and opinions are being flung around the internet about the fact that Oscar Pistorius is getting off with culpable homicide. There are plenty of people who believe he absolutely intended to kill his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, and there are others who genuinely believe, along with Oscar it seems, that he thought it was an intruder and shot at the door to give said intruder a scare.
Judge Masipa has yet to tell anyone what Oscar’s sentencing will be, but many people are comparing this case with that of Jub Jub.
Jub Jub was high on cocaine and was taking part in a high speed drag race when his car collided with a group of school children, killing four.
“(Jub Jub) should have foreseen the fact that drag racing next to a school could prove deadly.”
He has been sentenced, along with Themba Tshabalala, to 25 years in prison on four counts of murder.
If one compares the two cases, like the writer of the original article has expressed, they can be rather similar in certain aspects, so why the very different charges?
“Jub Jub, a black man who in no way intended to kill anybody, who acted recklessly with a tool designed specifically for transport, is in jail for 25 years.”
One can then compare Jub Jub with Oscar, “a white man who acted recklessly with a tool designed specifically for killing”.
So Jub Jub should have known that driving recklessly could kill someone. And Oscar should have known that shooting through a door would very likely kill someone.
We are as confused as the original writer as to why Oscar’s murder charge is dropped. WHY? Only Judge Masipa can answer that.
