Oh my.

Back in 2004 (that’s ten years ago, before your hair started going grey/falling out), we were all eagerly awaiting the release of Ocean’s Twelve. The team promoting the new Ocean’s movie thought it would be a genius idea to add two $300 000 diamonds onto the nose of two Formula One cars, specifically for the Monaco Grand Prix.

One of these diamonds went onto a Jaguar, driven by Christian Klien. Sadly, Klien didn’t make it around the first lap, and crashed the diamond-encrusted F1 car at the Loews Corner.

“At that point, I probably should’ve been worried about the car or the driver. But, I must admit, my immediate thought was for the diamond.”

Jaguar team spokesman Nav Sidhu was brutally honest about his thoughts as Klien flew through the air. The diamonds were on loan from Israeli gem firm Steinmetz, and were not insured. Because who would insure two diamonds on the front of Formula One cars? No one.

Another glitch in the diamond hunt was the safety regulations for the track: Team Jaguar had to wait two hours before they could start looking for the diamond, by which time it had probably been nicked by a spectator.

The diamond has yet to be found.
