The 26-year-old founder and CEO of JetSmarter, Sergey Petrossov, is quite literally taking travel to new heights.
After selling his first IT company in 2009, Petrossov had a bit of extra cash laying around and took to flying privately. He found it to be a bit of a hassle though, going through the whole booking and insurance process that comes with this (no one wants their private plane to go spiralling down into unwanted territory).
That’s when he decided to create JetSmarter.
“You can put in an itinerary anywhere [in the world], and you’re going to get jets pop up.”
The app takes into account a charter company’s flight schedules, plane GPS coordinates, safety ratings, price and handling fees. Petrossov says that they are a tech company, and not an airline.
“Somebody requested from Ecuador through Malta for us to transport, I think it was like a ton of gold. That was a total nightmare. That was definitely the craziest thing that we’ve had.”
With over 2 000 planes now involved with JetSmarter, travel is sure to become less cattle-class and more first class for everyone.
Let’s hope it gets to South Africa ASAP. Because, let’s face it, it will probably cost the same as a flight on SAA.
