It’s blatantly evident that the Islamic State is a major threat to the world, and US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has emphasised how dangerous and volatile the group is.
Describing them as “beyond just a terrorist group”, Hagel also said that “they marry ideology, a sophistication of military prowess.”
General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, also added that the IS fighters in Syria have nothing to lose and will be willing to resort to extreme measures to achieve their goals.
“This is an organisation that has an apocalyptic, end-of-days strategic vision and which will eventually have to be defeated,” he said at a briefing.
“Can they be defeated without addressing that part of their organisation which resides in Syria? The answer is no.
“That will have to be addressed on both sides of what is essentially at this point a non-existent border.”
