There’s a new controversy within schools in the Western Cape: the “rape, rape” game.
It’s being reported that students in some schools around the region are participating in the game, which sees boys chasing girls, catching them, and simulating a rape.
The provincial education department said it was horrified by news of the game and will launch an investigation.
The Mitchells Plain School Governing Body Association said that the concern surrounding the game is that it may normalise the act of rape for school-goers, and even children as young as 10 are playing the game.
“Children do not understand the implications,” said a principal who’d like to remain anonymous.
“The game desensitises them to rape, which can have dire consequences for society in the long run.”
