They can’t make you your morning cup of coffee just yet, but let’s hope this is a feat perfected in the not so distant future.

Harvard University professors are hard at work in making this come true, with over 1 000 california-roll-sized robots already making shapes as a group. They communicate with each other via infra-red, can “listen”, and are able to make their own decisions. Dr Michael Rubenstein and his team drew inspiration from ant swarms, which, when working as a group or team,“defy the limitations of an individual six-legged specimen”.
Although these Kilobots (named after the 1024 bytes in a kilobyte) could very well change the way we do things in the future, they are a bit fussy and slow, and they still make mistakes. Formations can take up to 12 hours, and Dr Rubenstein says this can be like watching paint dry.
In the meantime, grab a book and your coffee (that you had to make), and relax. THIS robot already exists, and it will change your domestic life. No one wants to mow the lawn on a Saturday afternoon when you could be doing absolutely anything else. The robot lawnmower is quicker and it cuts your lawn for you. Get yours at Cutters.
