Sightseers visit Kampala, Bunyoni and Queen Elizabeth National Park to see the abundant birdlife and track gorillas through the National Park in Uganda, with a seven-day gorilla encounter, including transport, guides and meals.
The Tour at a Glance
Starting in Kampala, one of Africa’s “greenest” cities, tours visit Lake Bunyonyi, famous for its stunning scenery and prolific birdlife, with over 200 species recorded. Groups visit the magnificent Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to almost half the number – approximately 350 – of mountain gorillas in the whole world and the only National Park in the whole world where chimpanzees co-exist with mountain gorillas. Tours also visit Queen Elizabeth National Park to see the giant forest hog and the legendary tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha Sector.

Itinerary
Day one: Kampala
After arrival in Kampala, groups meet up with their guides and spend the day exploring the area, with the option of taking a day trip to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary of Ngamba Island – a non-profit eco-friendly project set up in 1998 to care for orphaned chimpanzees – or visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre.
Day two: Kampala – Lake Bunyoni
Day two takes travellers to Lake Bunyonyi, a small but attractive lake with steep sides and abundant birdlife. Ringed by mountains, the lake is best known for its dense Otter population and stunning scenery. Groups make use of the beautiful location to relax before making the final drive to see the gorillas.
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day three and four: Gorillas (Lake Bunyoni)
The mountain gorilla is extremely endangered and while exact numbers vary it is widely assumed that there are only around 650 left. Visiting the gorillas is a great way to support their future on earth as the money spent on permits is used for their protection. An extremely important part of the future conservation of the remaining gorillas rests in the community development work – as local communities change their attitudes towards wildlife and start to protect rather than poach, the future of the mountain gorilla is assured.
As permits granting permission to visit the gorillas are extremely limited, flexibility is required in both the tour itinerary and where groups actually visit them. The home of the mountain gorillas is completely at odds with man-made borders and so, their range encompasses Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Should permits not be obtained to visit the mountain gorillas in Uganda, all passengers will be informed beforehand that the tour will travel to Rwanda or DRC.
During the free day in Bunyoni, travellers will have the opportunity to participate in certain optional activities, such as a boat ride to the community of the Batwa (pygmies) who stay in the islands adjacent to the lake to observe their social lifestyle, behaviour and their culture.
Optional activities: Visit to the Batwa (Pygmies) tribe, mountain biking, nature walk and hiking.
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Please note: Although there are two days allocated to Gorilla Trekking, you will only spend one day on the trek. The other day is there to provide a large enough window in which to obtain permits and to allow the entire group to trek if there are more than five of you on the tour.
Day five and six: Queen Elizabeth National Park
Leaving Lake Bunyoni, groups venture to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, where they will spend the next two nights. Many game species can be found in this wetland park, such as the giant forest hog and the legendary tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha Sector. Groups also enjoy an included 4×4 safari game drive on day six through the National Park.
Optional Activities: Kasinga Channel Sunset Cruise and chimpanzee trekking at Lake George
Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Included activity: Game Drive
Day seven: Kampala
Groups drive back to Kampala where the tour will come to an end.
