After being in asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy for over two years, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has announced that he will be leaving the embassy.
Assange has been taking refuge in the embassy to avoid extradition back to Sweden, and has said that the time has finally come for his departure.
“I can confirm I am leaving the embassy soon, but not for the reason you might think.”
“The situation must come to an end … two years is too long,” added Ecuador’s foreign minister Ricardo Patin. “It is time to free Julian Assange. It is time for his human rights to be respected.”
The Swedish authorities want to question Assange related to allegations that he raped one woman and sexually molested another (both WikiLeaks volunteers), but Assange denies the claims and says that they’re politically motivated.
