It is a troubling reality when the very people who are supposed to be enforcing the laws and protecting citizens with said laws become abusive of their power. This clip and the attached story really shows how far some metro cops overstep the line.
When this young woman made it clear she was aware of her rights and what the cops were in fact entitled to ask her to do, she reports that they became aggressive and refused to give her their badge numbers of other identification.
O’Brien explains that she “literally ramped a pavement to drive away because I was getting so scared.” According to her story, the male officer at the scene asked her to stop what she was doing [filming] and that it was illegal (it is not). “Then the one senior officer,” she concludes, “Said to his colleagues, ‘just arrest her for not complying’ and tried to open my car door… I also seem to have hurt my arm quite badly, I’m not sure if this is from being held down or from when I pushed them off me.”
Kady-Shay O’Brien’s experience is just one in a sea of similar experiences, and as she explains, “…as soon as you challenge them and are aware of your rights and the law, then they get angry. If we all just stood up for ourselves and didn’t give in to bribes or being forced out of the car I think we could start changing this bully culture.”
While the details of what happened after the phone was slapped out of her hand are not clear, this definitely seems like yet another case of brutality to add to the pile.
