While it was one of the catchiest and most popular pop songs in 2013, Robin Thicke’s “rape anthem” caused massive uproar for it’s inappropriate and problematic lyrics. And then Kearsney College decided to perform it….
While the school swears they did not know it was such a controversial song, it seems difficult to believe that they did not realise it would be inappropriate for teenage boys to be singing about such explicit content. Then again, are people making a big deal out of nothing?
The real uproar about the lyrics of the song came when rape survivors revealed that the lyrics of the song were eerily close to the lines used by their attackers to justify their actions.
While The Kearsney College choir won gold for their rendition of ‘Blurred Lines’, the school has apologised for their ignorance as to the offensive nature of the song and has removed the song from their repertoire, explaining to the boys why the lyrics of the song are problematic and reinforce rape culture and victim blaming.
Bit of a PR nightmare for the school really… maybe do a bit more research before you make your next song choice?
