Internet penetration is growing steadily in South Africa, however, there are communities in the country who are struggling to get access to the World Wide Web due to underdevelopment.
To assist with this, online classified company Gumtree is teaming up with Project Isizwe to help deploy free WiFi zones around the country.
“Our aim is not only to connect economically disadvantaged individuals to the internet for the first time, we also have the larger goal of connecting those individuals with opportunities such as 60 000 jobs registered on our site, or to gain free exposure for their own businesses by tapping into the platform and our user base”, said Gumtree country manager Johan Nel.
The roll-out has already begun in the Pretoria areas, and while the WiFi will be free, there will be a 250MG cap for each device connected.
