Land claims in South Africa is an on-going issue, and after assessing the lodges, it appears that a majority of them are not actually seeking the land itself, but rather financial compensation.
Just under 5,500 claims have been made since the new five-year period for lodging land claims opened at the beginning of the month.
“We have noted that the majority of those who have lodged claims since the re-opening of the lodgement of land claims have opted for financial compensation,” said chief land claims commissioner Nomfundo Gobodo.
Gobodo also said that claiming the land would be a more suitable choice for claimants, which would help tackle the issue of uneven land-ownership correctly.
