Ever wanted to surprise the girl next door when she gets home, with a candle-lit dinner in the hopes of wooing her? This app will help you, all you need is her keys.
Okay, yes if you have the keys you can easily get into the house, but now there is an app that will make a copy of the key for you (without checking if it is in fact your key). Andy from Wired gives us the scenario:
My neighbor lives on the second floor of a Brooklyn walk-up, so when I came to his front door he tossed me a pair of keys rather than walk down the stairs to let me in. I opened the door, climbed the stairs, and handed his keys back to him. We chatted about our weekends. I drank a glass of water. Then I let him know that I would be back soon to gain unauthorised access to his home.
Less than an hour later, I owned a key to his front door.
What I didn’t tell my neighbor was that I spent about 30 seconds in the stairwell scanning his keys with software that would let me reproduce them with no specialised skills whatsoever. The iPhone app I used wasn’t intended for anything so nefarious: KeyMe was designed to let anyone photograph their keys and upload them to the company’s servers.
Of course, the innocent little folks who thought this would be fun clearly did not think about how this might impact those who are… well not quite honest and such stand-up citizens. Their intention was to be able to make customised keys in various shapes – all in the name of style and fun, you know? Not to be able to steal cars or houses… who would do that?
Basically, in spite of security measure claimed to be in place by the company, your keys are now as safe as your ATM pin being stored in your wallet with your bank cards.
If you do, however, really need a copy of your keys in a hurry, this is a useful service.
