Our beautiful South Africa citizens have some interesting internet habits – and as the local digital media community evolves, SA internet users are using SA-owned sites more and more.
That said, sites like Google and Facebook still dominate the top 10 most-visited sites by South Africans. You can check out that list here from Alexa. But we were interested to see where some of our South African-owned sites came in this ranking and what kind of behaviour we are most prone to.
According to Alexa, SuperSport.com is listed at number 38 on the overall list (which includes international sites), and number 10 on the locally-owned sites. Property24 then comes in at number 30 on the overall list and scrapes in at number 9 in terms of local sites. Number 8 is MyBroadband.co.za comes in at 27 on the overall list and ninth place on the local-only list.
iol and OLX nabbed the number 6 and 7 spots respectively, with Standard Bank and Absa creeping up the list at 4 and 5, but are still only 16 and 18 on the bigger list.
The most popular banking site was FNB, which came in at number 2, and BidorBuy separating the banks at number 3. Clearly FNB’s ad’s have been more effective than the Steve-haters would like.
The top spot is not very surprising, with number 1 being News 24.
