Weddings are simultaneously stressful and joyous events. Any event where your entire family is gathered together WITH all your best friends is going to be stressful, especially when it is hyped up as “the most important day of your life.”
Thus, in our times of need we all turn to the people we trust – like our parents – for sage advice and guidance to make us feel a little less out of control. Unfortunately, while they may be great at giving relationship advice or telling you which medicine to take to make you feel better when you have the sniffles, sometimes our nearest and dearest actually give us terrible advice.
The Knot has compiled a few of the worst things brides have been told, and for your amusement we have picked the five worst pieces of advice.
Warning: if you are planning on getting married soon DO NOT follow this advice…
The worst wedding advice anyone has told me was to sing our vows to each other. – Erin, Richmond, VA
I was told that if the groom was unavailable during the toast, the bride has to kiss the best man. – Anonymous
My mother-in-law said that it was perfectly fine to spend $9 [Roughly R90] a plate on dinner for our guests. She based this on my sister-in-law’s wedding, where they served cold meat sandwiches, au gratin potatoes, and questionable-looking fruit salad. – Morgan, Madison WI
My mother said that to cut costs, we could send invitations without an RSVP card. Guests could go online instead and RSVP on the web page my dad built for us. I thought it was a good idea, but only two people RSVP’d! I ended up having to call my entire guest list to find out who was coming. – Nicki, Oklahoma City, OK
My fiance suggested we randomize the seating for all our guests because it would be cool for everyone to meet new people. I can just imagine my crazy friend from grad school and Aunt June at the same table. Yikes! – Vicki, Durham, NC
So who’s advice can you take? Well, ours – obviously!
