In this day and age where social media is pretty much your public front, you do have to be aware of what you post on it. This is particularly true when you are affiliated in any way with politics: if you didn’t realise this before, you definitely should not be involved in any political activities.
Rene Smit claims on her Facebook page that she managed social media for the ANC in the Western Cape. On this same Facebook page she thought it would be fine to post this picture of Hitler:
What baffles us is that she didn’t realise when she saw this post that it may be offensive to a fair few people. While she says she removed the post as soon as she realised that it may be inappropriate and offensive, this seems like too little too late for someone who is supposedly the social media manager for the ruling party.
While everyone should be free to express their opinions, there is a time, place, and appropriate manner in which it should be done – particularly if you affiliate yourself with the PC ANC.
The SA Jewish Board of Deputies has asked for a meeting with ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe over the incident, reported the Times.
Western Cape ANC spokesperson Cobus Grobler said Smit was not a party employee but helped during its election campaign as a volunteer.
The Jewish board said it is also considering taking ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte to court over her comments in which she likened Israel’s attacks on Palestine to Nazism.
Smit has removed the Hitler post from her page but has continued pledging support for Palestine. At the weekend she also posted a photo stating that the same person who was contracted to build Israel’s separation wall, dubbed by many as an “apartheid wall”, funds the DA.
PR nightmare for the ANC! Roll out the damage control.
