WELL that got you interested… and so you should be! It’s the World Cup final!
With Argentina and Germany in the final, the battle has escalated to a supposed battle of pope-past and pope-present. The current Pope, as we all know, is Argentinian, Pope Francis. His predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is German, and hence the battle of the popes was conceptualised.
What geniuses we have in this world.
And so to the decision at hand: who carries more favour with “The Creator”?
Really, if you think about it and if you believe in the deity, does God really have time to worry about who wins the football final? He/She surely has better things to do with His/Her one day off than decide who is more holy between the two popes.
All that aside:
One might envision the retired pope inviting the current pope around to his monastery inside Vatican City to watch the game over a stein of beer. But the Vatican says that is highly unlikely. On Thursday, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told The Daily Beast that he didn’t envision the two popes would be settling down to watch the final game together. “The game is late for Pope Francis,” he said, noting the 9pm Rome start time was edging up to the Holy Father’s bedtime. He also noted that “Pope Emeritus is notably not a big sports fan.”
One thing is for sure though, it is going to be a thrilling game!
