A sad turn of events has found that Danmel farm in Potchefstroom has been involved in some serious negligence and maltreatment of the pigs that live on the farm.
The animals were found to have been starving to death, and even cannibalising the dead pigs to survive.
“It was one of the worst scenes I witnessed in my 20 years at the SPCA,” Senior inspector for the national SPCA task team, Andries Venter, said.
The farm is owned by former North West premier and newly-elected National Council of Provinces chairperson, Thandi Modise, who left the farm in the hands of the replacement manager, who had taken a leave for two weeks to attend to family matters.
Sheep, geese, goats and ducks were also some of the animals that had died on the farm.
