Party drugs like cocaine and ecstasy have long since been the fancy of wealthy party goers but as the drugs get cheaper (be it because they are less pure or just more readily available) more people are finding themselves not just using the drugs, but abusing them and developing addictions.
According to the latest study by the UN, Scotland (officially classed with under Great Britain) has the highest cocaine use worldwide! One in every forty people in Scotland take cocaine with England and Wales not far behind at one in every fifty.
The shock report comes after celebrities including Russell Brand, Sir Richard Branson and Sting called on the Government to end its ‘war on drugs’,
In an open letter to David Cameron, more than 80 campaigners urged the Prime Minister to launch a review of Britain’s drugs policy.
The letter said more than 1.5 million people have been criminalised in the UK for drugs possession over the last 15 years.
It said evidence from Australia, the Czech Republic and Portugal that health problems linked to drugs are ‘dramatically’ reduced when users are given medical support and advice rather than being prosecuted.
Although it does seem like the stats are fairly indicative of the reality, it should also be noted that the Scots’ stringent record may over-inflate the figure as compared to other nations.
SA looks like it is not too far behind…
