A bridge collapsed yesterday in one of Brazil’s World Cup host cities – Belo Horizonte. Tragedy has struck just before the city is due to host the semi-final early next week.
The unfinished bridge is part of the large sections of incomplete infrastructure for public transport that was due to be completed by the time the World Cup kicked off in Brazil this year. Upon it’s collapse, it is reported that there were no workers on the bridge at the time but multiple vehicles were crushed beneath the structure including the front of a public bus.
At this stage the death toll may still rise but the Guardian is reporting at least two deaths and 19 injuries (although medical authorities put this figure at 22). At the time of publishing, there seems to still be a vehicle trapped under the concrete and emergency workers are unsure how many people may be inside and whether or not there are survivors in the vehicle.
Time reports that one of the fatalities was the woman who was driving the bus.
