It’s now no surprise that the professional cycling world is rife with drug use, and sadly, the latest perpetrator to allegedly indulge in some booster-juice is none other than South African Tour de France rider, Daryl Impey.
Impey, who became the first South African to wear the Yellow Jersey in last year’s Tour de France, was found to have tested positive for the banned substance, Probenecid, but Impey is adamant to prove that he isn’t guilty and released a statement in response to the drug findings.
I remain confident I will be vindicated and proved innocent of any wrongdoing. Every result I have achieved to date has been because of hard work and dedication on my part.
The Daily Maverick’s Richard Poplack is skeptical and addressed Impey’s statement, saying that the likelihood of him having “no knowledge” of Probenecid is extremely slim.
Impey’s former teammate, Tour de France champion Chris Froome, also chimed in on the issue when asked by the BBC:
I haven’t spoken to Daryl, but it’s shocking news to see that he’s returned a positive test. Especially when it is someone you know personally, it makes it a lot more difficult.
