The “bad girl” of British tennis, Naomi Broady, has just made a huge point to the Lawn Tennis Association by winning her Wimbledon match against Timea Babos, despite having no support or funding from the LTA.
Broady’s 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 victory over Babos set her with a healthy win of around £43,000 (around R773,000). This is the first big spot of cash for the 24-year-old since being stripped of her LTA funding.
What happened was when Broady was 17, she was suspended by the LTA over a picture posted on social media (shown below) from a night out, which cut her finances and sponsorship potential dramatically – a huge blow for an aspiring and talented athlete.
“I don’t know if it makes my win sweeter, but it’s more satisfying because it’s been me that’s achieved this,” said Broady.
I still to this day don’t particularly see what was the big deal. I wasn’t doing drugs. I wasn’t paralytic drunk on the floor.
It was just a stupid, jokey pose that looked horrible but I didn’t even know it was a condom machine.
But I don’t regret it, I believe everything happens for a reason. It’s been tough. I don’t have any money for myself, it all goes back into my tennis.
