It seems that Hollywood isn’t creating anything that isn’t a reboot, sequel or adaptation these days, and it makes one miss some of the unique and original ideas that came out of the 80s.
There’s something about the silver-screen releases back in the 1980s that stands out – whether they were cheesy or plain brilliant, the movies have a special something that has surpassed the test of time, as the screenings of these very movies today is evidence of that.
Let’s just take a look at the theatrical releases this past weekend, but 20 years ago, back to 1984:
Ghostbusters
Gremlins
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
The Karate Kid
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Top Secret!
The Natural
Police Academy
Plus, Sixteen Candles and Footloose had just closed the weekend before.
Just about every movie on that list has become a cult-classic, whereas today we see maybe one big action flick or comedy that drops weekly and is quickly forgotten.
