Amid the festivities and celebrations there are some very unhappy locals in Brazil.
There are numerous groups of locals who have expressed their anger and frustration towards the fact that so much is being spent on the World Cup, when basic services are not sufficiently funded in Brazil.
Yesterday’s protest in Sao Paulo, roughly 100 people strong, turned violent as police used tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Following the first clash, the protesters regrouped and clashed with police for a second time.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has dismissed complaints about the heavy spending and delays in preparing stadiums and airports.
“What I’m seeing more and more is the welcome given to the teams and the happiness of the Brazilian people with our team,” she declared.
Police reports suggest that at least 5 people were injured in these clashes. There were protests staged around the country in other host cities, but this seems to have been the most aggressive, even if not the largest.
