Marketing is all about knowing your target market and being able to deliver on your promises, we know, but even if a live sheep is what will make your customers buy more booze, it is not ok to have it displayed like a stuffed animal… Sheep have feelings too.
Animal cruelty charges have been laid against a Spar Tops liquor shop in Butterworth, Eastern Cape, after a sheep was allegedly tied up and displayed as a prize.
“The photographs show a live sheep with its legs tied together on the floor of the [Tops at Spar] bottle store without freedom of movement or access to water,” the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) said on Thursday.
This is not the first time the liquor store has been found displaying prize-sheep around their stores. Really, having the live animal in the store is a bit much. Are people really that sceptical that having a regular advertisement would have been insufficient to convince them that a real sheep was actually on offer?
Representatives from the company have not commented.
Naughty Spar… at least give the poor animal a little bed and some water in the corner if you must have the actual prize on display.
Also, what a weird prize for buying booze…?
