Ah, l’amour. The weight of it can be immense! The old joke about the ball and chain springs to mind… but jokes aside for a moment the “love” of easily hundreds of couples has collapsed in Paris.
A five-foot piece of railing on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris collapsed Sunday night under the weight of “love locks,” padlocks attached to the bridge by couples as a display of their everlasting love. Hopefully the couples who attached these locks have relationships stronger than bridge railings.
The bridge was closed following the collapse to allow for the locks and railings to be cleared, and a board to be put up as a temporary replacement for the railings. The board has not stopped the love sharing though…
While the movement to stop this practice of putting “love locks” on bridges gains momentum (out of concern for the weight these symbolic additions put on the structures to which they are attached), it seems it will be no match for the power of love… or something less cheesy.
