New Coke Ad Embraces Calories [Video]

This is different... explicitly advertising how many calories your product contains instead of trying to make it sound healthier than it is? That's what you call embracing criticism and putting a positive spin on it....

For so long we have been warned of the massive amount of calories that sugary soft-drinks like Coke contain. It seems that warnings are working, as sales seem to be on the decrease and Coke has employed a new advertising campaign.

Just last year, US sales volume declined 3%, faster than the 1.2% drop the previous year, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest. And critics are increasingly taking aim at other sugary beverages sold by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, such as sports drinks and juices.

Judith Snyder, a Coca-Cola spokesperson, said the latest video is part of a series that show “moments of delight and surprise” with Coke. She said it’s intended to address the theme of energy balance in a lighthearted way.

While it may be unrealistic to try and burn-off all the calories you consume in this way, it is an interesting slant on the topic and a pretty smart move on the cola companies’ part to embrace criticism and create positivity out of it. For 23 minutes of exercise we would indulge in a coke almost guilt free… or not?
